While providing web-based services is one of those server-y things Linux does really well, Linux can do a lot more than host a blog about family outings. Choosing the specific Linux distribution for your home server can be daunting in itself since there are so many strains to choose from. Most of the time, I just roll with Ubuntu and recommend that first-time users do the same. See these instructions for installing Ubuntu Server. There is a huge amount of free and open-source software you can host yourself, but finding it can be tricky.

Luckily, a GitHub user named Edward D. The list has everything from blog software to CRM. Indeed, sovereign is a good starting point for users who are looking to be digitally self-reliant. Once you have an idea of what you want to host on your server, the next step is choosing the right hardware.

One of the most common ways to use Linux in a home server is to install the OS on an old desktop. The hardware requirements for Windows have marched forward as time and Windows versions have progressed. That old PC could be a nice host for Linux. On top of saving you some money, repurposing an old PC as a Linux server is good for the environment.

Other models will force you to outsource bulk storage of big files to an external drive, not unlike the Pi. Both companies offer many of the same features, but the web interfaces are different for each. For small businesses that just need something to work, a medium-sized NAS can be a simple, plug-and-play solution.

Hard drives for NAS boxes tend to cost a little more than the typical desktop hard drive, since they are designed to be always-on, and to keep data safe for a long period of time. A virtual private server is exactly what it sounds like: a virtual machine instance in a server farm. Unlike running a service on a home server, a VPS does not require you to open up ports on your router and fiddle with dynamic DNS.

Of the VPS providers out there, Digital Ocean offers some of the better deals for the individual or small business. Besides being a great way to learn how Linux works, running your own server at home can allow you to break away from commercial services and take back control of your data.

Truth be told, I think it came from the factory in a bad state, as I originally thought I had a bad graphics driver, but I then noticed that, after much troubleshooting, it wasn't a driver issue at all.

The box just sometimes wouldn't boot up correctly with video. It seems heat related, something like not enough thermal paste on the CPU, as after it is powered off for a while it is more likely to boot than when it is warm. Along with that issue, this box maxed out at 4GB of RAM only has 2 memory slots, each of which will only take a 2GB card max and had a single processor, so it was under powered for Security Onion.

So, I decided to quit limping along on P. Sure, I could get a full-blown PC, but that is loud, takes up space and power, and usually has things I don't need like an expensive graphics card. Enter the Antsle. He said that he had heard good things about it, especially that their customer support was very good.

I did some checking, and the Antsle seemed to be just what I was looking for.We will also configure the computer to use SSH, so we can control the computer from another computer. The main advantage of setting up your mining computer using SSH is primarily because if you have multiple mining computers, you can control all of them from a main desktop or laptop that is connected to the same network. Because of this, I have chosen Ubuntu Server for our Linux distribution.

The LTS version of Ubuntu server, is the one we want to download. This is because the LTS version provides updates for about five years after the release date.

We want the long term update version, since we will download drivers from their package repository. The non LTS versions only provide updates for nine months, meaning we would have to reinstall or update the OS every nine months, instead of five years. Make sure you download the I will be using the beta version of I DO NOT suggest using a beta version for your mining computer, so it may be best to just wait until the official Ubuntu I am just using the beta so I can write the tutorial for the future Ubuntu I prefer to write it to a USB drive, so I will explain this in the tutorial.

Once you have made sure you have filled out all of the settings correctly, click the start button. Once it is completed, you need to install the Linux OS on your mining rig.

I am not going to explain this process, since it is pretty straightforward and varies because of each individuals hardware. I will however give a brief overview of how I installed the Linux OS. You will need a keyboard, mouse and monitor connected to the mining computer to install the Linux OS.More links at the end of this post. Stock processor options for the HP Microserver Gen8. The system also shipped with a single GB SATA drive and three empty trays for expansion, connected to the onboard Bi storage controller. One of the first things I do when building or populating a system is to upgrade any applicable firmware on the system. This could include the lights-out management, the system BIOS itself, drive controllers, optical drives, etc. Luckily and I say that sadlysome of the critical vulnerabilities around Intel microcode in the past year led to the most recent Microserver Gen8 BIOS being considered critical.

Our Mission Our mission is to put the power of computing and digital making into the hands of people all over the world.Meta: As per always, I wrote some of this this a few months ago but it got delayed for motivation reasons. Some of the details I put in here are based on some configurations that were available in around August of last year, and it appears some new configurations have been added.

I thought it was an interesting idea, and the ad they aim specifically at the homelab subreddit is particularly interesting, because it basically claims to compete with VPS services from cloud providers. In this article, I will not address privacy concerns: I think you either believe a cloud product is "fine" and it sufficiently addresses privacy and data safety concerns, or you do not, and you likely wouldn't use one anyway. Antsle is a small virtualization appliance running a Gentoo-based distribution and some customized management tools.

The hardware is mediocre: there are 4- and 8-core versions based on a now-old Intel Atom processor, and it can be equipped with up to four 2. Although they say this voids any remaining warranty. The machines are extremely costly for what you get. It bears mentioning again the CPUs they've used are a high-end Atom. They should do most things fine, but they are by no means speed demons. The site claims the Antsle is for developers and geeks who want to use VPS services and get advantages of cloud computing, but don't want to, you know, actually use cloud computing.

The other issue I have with this marketing is that it seems odd to market an appliance to the developer and geek market. The Antsle is normal x86 computer onto which you could install another OS, but a huge part of their marketing is about using their mix on the ideas of virtualization and containerization. These customers are the ones most likely to want to run their own software stack or are willing to do the installation on the appliance operating system of their choice.

The Product page talks about easy access to your Antsle from anywhere and use cases such as hosting web sites, but it doesn't talk about how. They don't address the potential costs or inconvenience of using a home or small office Internet connection to run one of these devices. The way this must happen is either your Antsle phones home or another service and your data flows through a remote datacenter when you access it from out of your home or office, or you must purchase an Internet connection with one or more static IPs that allows in its terms of service running servers, and a domain name usually needed on cloud services as well.

The other ISP in my area charges even more for lower speeds. An Antsle is favorably priced if you do not count the cost of an Internet connection. That's only one situation, but it's worth noting that Antsle materials rely extremely heavily on advertising it as something on which you can run public-facing services.

So, we have to presume that you're buying up to the highest possible Internet connection speed and purchasing one or more static IPs to use for service. The cost of DNS services and any software you might be licensing on the device will be the same for both EC2 and an Antsle.

How to have a Linux home server on the cheap

It's worth mentioning here that regular tower servers are a lot less expensive than Antsle for configurations that are much faster. The T30 is easier to maintain and upgrade, so putting in a second hard disk and configuring mirroring should be easy and inexpensive. If you step up one level in Dell's product line, you can configure the machine from the factory with solid state disks and multiple drives. Part of the advantage of buying such a system from Dell or building your own compared to the Antsle, specifically is that you can balance the system to your needs.

The trade-offs here are that the machine won't be completely silent and you are trading solid state storage for two slower hard disks, which should be fine for passive server workloads, even with several virtual machines. I personally tend to believe that silence is a little overrated anyway, but if you need silence, the best thing about servers is that you can generally locate them away from your primary work or living area.
